Purple Mastiff

Description

The Purple Mastiff is an enormous, muscular creature with the body of a colossal worm and the head of a fierce mastiff. Its skin is a deep, bruised purple, covered in thick, segmented scales that provide formidable natural armor. Its massive, powerful jaws are lined with jagged, crystalline teeth, and its stinger is a long, venomous spike that drips with toxic green ichor. Despite its lack of eyes, the Purple Mastiff navigates its underground domain with exceptional skill, using its keen sense of smell and tremorsense to hunt prey and avoid danger. Its growl reverberates through the earth, a sound that spells doom for any creature unfortunate enough to hear it.

Traits

Tunneller. The Purple Mastiff can burrow through solid rock at half its burrow speed and leaves a 10-foot-diameter tunnel in its wake.

 

Keen Smell. The Purple Mastiff has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.

 

Actions

Multiattack. The Purple Mastiff makes two attacks: one with its bite and one with its stinger.

 

BiteMelee Weapon Attack: +15 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (3d8 + 9) piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it is grappled (escape DC 19). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and the Purple Mastiff can't bite another target.

 

StingerMelee Weapon Attack:  +15 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 19 (3d6 + 9) piercing damage plus 15 (3d10) poison damage. The target must make a DC 20 Constitution saving throw, taking the poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

 

Swallow. The Purple Mastiff makes one bite attack against a Large or smaller target it is grappling. If the attack hits, the target is swallowed, and the grapple ends. The swallowed target is blinded and restrained, it has total cover against attacks and other effects outside the Purple Mastiff, and it takes 21 (6d6) acid damage at the start of each of the Purple Mastiff's turns. If the Purple Mastiff takes 30 damage or more on a single turn from a creature inside it, the Purple Mastiff must succeed on a DC 21 Constitution saving throw at the end of that turn or regurgitate the swallowed creature, which falls prone in a space within 10 feet of the Purple Mastiff. If the Purple Mastiff dies, a swallowed creature is no longer restrained by it and can escape from the corpse by using 15 feet of movement, exiting prone.

 

Legendary Actions

The Purple Mastiff can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The Purple Mastiff regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

 

Detect. The Purple Mastiff makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.

 

Tail Attack. The Purple Mastiff makes a stinger attack.

 

Move. The Purple Mastiff moves up to half its speed.
